Condition/Need

Ankle foot orthoses (AFO) play an integral role in the management of foot drop/drop foot for a variety of different pathologies. With a wide range of options available for designs and materials, the function of each AFO can be finely tuned to meet the individual needs of each user. Although the requirements of each individual may differ, providing an AFO that facilitates the safest and most energy-efficient movement pattern is the primary goal. An AFO is designed to support, align, correct, protect and/or improve the function of the foot and ankle. Based on the patient’s needs, many designs can be utilized. An AFO may be prescribed for conditions such as muscle weakness, prevention or correction of deformities of foot and ankle, and reduction in weight-bearing forces and spasticity. Most of these symptoms are a result of stroke (CVA), multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, diabetic neuropathy, and other neuromuscular conditions.
